About J.G. McKenney

Although the name on my books is “J.G.” McKenney, you can call me John. I’m a writer and a teacher. I also consider myself a book knight, but you’ll need to read my latest novel to find out what that’s all about.

My fascination with fantasy and adventure began at a young age when I discovered works like THE HOBBIT and THE CALL OF THE WILD. That early love of reading has matured into a need to tell stories that transport readers into worlds full of wonder and enchantment. It’s an addiction I don’t intend to kick. The problem is I’ll be dead long before I can write all the books I’ve got in my head. There…just thought of another one.

In the winter, if I’m not at work keeping tabs on my Co-op students, you’ll find me at home working away on a manuscript, reading someone else’s book, or walking with my wife and best friend, Wendy. If it’s Friday afternoon, I’ll be playing hockey with the boys.

Summer’s my favorite season because it gives me more time to write. It’s also the time for boating, swimming, and reclining in my zero-gravity chair under the shade of the maple trees next the lake shore. Oh, and walking with my wife. If it’s Thursday afternoon, I’ll be playing golf with…you guessed it…the boys.

I’d love to hear from you. Follow me on Twitter @JGMcKenney or reach out through my “Contact Me” page with your questions or comments. I’ll let you know about my promotions, including when I offer free books!

INTERVIEW

Arvenig: Hello, could you tell us a little about yourself and your background?

J.G. McKenney: I was born and raised in Smiths Falls, Ontario, Canada, and I live on nearby Otter Lake. I’ve always been active, playing hockey and golf from a very young age. My love of literature and learning led me to a teaching and writing career. THE BOOK KNIGHTS is my second novel, after EON’S DOOR.

A.: When did you begin writing and when did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

J.: I was writing stories a far back as I can remember, but my career as a writer came late. The need to craft stories was always there, but the demands of a full-time job and a busy home life delayed it for me. I knew I was going to write, but I wanted to give it the time and effort it deserved. Now I can’t imagine not doing it.

A.: What book/books or author/authors have had a strong influence on you or your writing?

J.: Many authors and books have had an influence on me and my writing. In fantasy, Tolkien, Lewis, Gaiman, Pullman and Le Guin have been inspirations, and I really enjoy the work of newer talents like Patrick Rothfuss and Scott Lynch. But my influences go far beyond the fantasy genre. I believe a good writer needs to be a good reader and explore the whole world of great literature and its history. My writing wouldn’t be the same if I hadn’t read Shakespeare and Orwell and Hemingway.

A.: Give us an insight into your main character. What does she do that is so special?

J.: Arti Penderhagen must wield the pen, Excalibri, and write the words that will alter the course of history to save the world. No pressure, eh? The problem is she’s not sure what that future should be and she’s afraid she’s going to fail. What makes her special is the truth she discovers about herself, but you’ll have to read the book to find out what that is and if she figures it out in time.

A.: What do you think most characterizes your writing?

J.: I like my writing to flow, for the words to be a pleasure to read. I enjoy exploring themes that readers can identify with and that make them think, while still being entertaining and fun. I work hard to create immersive worlds that readers believe could be real, and characters they will care about.

A.: Is there a message in your story that you want readers to grasp?

J.: I want them to realize how important the power of words is to us, and how much we need to protect and share that power with others.

A.: What are you working on at the moment?

J.: I’m outlining a series about a young paraplegic who enters a different dimension when he dreams, a place where a war to protect the consciousness of humanity has been fought for millennia. And I’ve also done some preliminary work on a sequel to THE BOOK KNIGHTS. But I’m waiting to see how the first book is received before committing to a second.

A.:Thank you so much for letting me interview you, any last thoughts for our readers?

J.: Keep reading. Challenge yourself by exploring new genres and new authors. And remember that the magic that comes from reading—the magic explored in THE BOOK KNIGHTS—is real.
